November “Whale of the Month”: One of the most charismatic humpback whales in the Salish Sea is without question MMX0167, better known as “Stitch”. Stitch is easily identified by what looks like a 😕 emoji on the left side of the flukes. Based on photographs, we believe that Stitch is a male, and a curious one at that! He has earned a reputation as a “mugger”, meaning he occasionally approaches vessels to participate in a bit of people-watching. You might remember last year he made the news by mimicking the sounds of our boat (https://ftw.usatoday.com/…/humpback-whale-mimics-boat-sound…). Stitch also enjoys rolling in kelp and socializing with other whales. Fall is when most humpback whales seize their final opportunities to feed on fish and krill before beginning their long migration to the breeding grounds. Thanks to Happywhale, we know that Stitch visits the warm waters of Hawaii in the winter months. We wish Stitch and all the other Salish Sea humpback whales safe travels this winter and look forward to seeing them next spring! 🐋
