Well, it’s official! We are back on the water in search of the beautiful animals that come to visit us in  the Salish Sea! We had a very excited and energetic group on today, making it a great way to start the season. After boarding the boat, we passed out the binoculars and the search was on! We cruised south toward Possession Point, as we had an early morning report of animals in that direction. It took some time, but we eventually spotted the blow in the distance letting us know that a
whale was nearby. After a few passes we were able to identify this gray whale as #531, a female that we actually did not see last year. Our special guest onboard today, John Calambokidis from Cascadia Research, passed on very interesting information for our guests about the whales. We had some nice looks at this whale and then scooted over to a navigational marker with two Steller sea lions that were hauled out to rest. One of the sea lions was huge and he lifted his head for a moment, yawned and then put his head right back down to resume his nap. After passing some additional sea lions and two mature bald eagles, Capt. Shane called out “we’ve got another whale up ahead!” Sweet! This was a treat as we id’d this whale as #723 or ‘Lucy’! Great looks at this guy as he passed right by the boat several times! Heading home we showed the identification guide book to our passengers, as they asked great questions and enjoyed their trip! It’s great to be back on the water, what a way to start 2016!
